Bringing your wife and children to the Gulf is one of the biggest decisions a migrant worker makes. It is also an area where wrong information spreads fast — in WhatsApp groups, from agents, and from friends who applied years ago under old rules. This guide explains how family sponsorship works in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait, and where you must check the current numbers yourself before you spend money.
One honest warning first: salary thresholds, dependent fees and eligible-profession lists change often. Anyone who quotes you an exact figure without showing you the government page it came from is guessing. Below, we give figures only where an official portal states them, and otherwise we tell you which office to ask.
What all six countries have in common
- You must be a legal resident yourself. Your iqama, Emirates ID, QID or resident card must be valid with enough time left on it.
- Your job title matters, not only your pay. Most Gulf countries restrict family sponsorship by the profession recorded on your permit. If it says “labourer” or “driver”, you may be blocked even when your pay is good.
- Your documented salary matters, not your cash income. Immigration checks your registered contract and salary record, not overtime or side work.
- You must prove the relationship on paper. Attested marriage and birth certificates, translated into Arabic, are non-negotiable.
- You must show accommodation. A tenancy contract in your name, or an employer letter confirming family housing.
- Medical tests and health insurance apply to arriving family members in most countries.
Prepare your documents at home first
This step causes more delays than anything else. The usual chain for a marriage or birth certificate is: issued by the local authority, attested by your country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, attested by the Gulf country’s embassy in your country, then attested again by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Gulf country. An Arabic translation by an approved translator is normally required. A certificate that is only notarised locally will be rejected, and your application fee is wasted.
Saudi Arabia
Two different things are both called “family visa”. A family visit visa brings your wife and children temporarily. A family residence visa makes them residents with their own iqama. Both are applied for through Absher, and your employer’s government-relations officer usually files through Muqeem.
For residence sponsorship, the profession on your iqama must be eligible, your iqama must be valid, and your salary as registered with GOSI is checked. Saudi Arabia also charges a fee for each dependent. Amounts and exemptions have changed more than once, so confirm the current dependent fee and salary condition on absher.sa and muqeem.sa, or with your employer, before you commit. After arrival, your family must complete medical testing and iqama issuance within the period Jawazat sets.
United Arab Emirates
The UAE publishes the clearest criteria. GDRFA Dubai states the sponsor’s salary condition as AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation provided by the employer, and allows sponsorship of sons up to 25 years old. Unmarried daughters may be sponsored without that age limit. The family entry permit for residence allows 60 days to complete the process inside the country.
GDRFA lists the entry-permit fee as AED 200 plus 5% VAT, with extra charges (Knowledge and Innovation dirhams and a processing fee) if the applicant is already inside the country, and a service time of about 48 hours. Those are entry-permit charges only — medical testing, Emirates ID, insurance and stamping are separate. Dubai residents apply through GDRFA or an Amer centre; other emirates use ICP smart services. Bring your passport and residence, employment contract and salary certificate, tenancy contract, and attested marriage and birth certificates.
Qatar
Family residence permits are handled by the Ministry of Interior, through the MOI portal or the Metrash2 app. Qatar applies both a salary condition and a profession condition, and requires suitable family accommodation — a tenancy contract in your name or a company letter. School-age children are expected to be enrolled in school. Qatar has revised its thresholds and qualifying professions in recent years, so check moi.gov.qa or hukoomi.gov.qa rather than trusting figures shared by colleagues.
Oman
Family joining visas are issued by the Royal Oman Police through the ROP electronic services portal, usually with your employer’s support. Oman restricts sponsorship by profession category and applies a salary condition, and requires attested certificates plus proof of accommodation. Confirm your eligibility on rop.gov.om before booking tickets, because profession eligibility is the most common reason for rejection.
Bahrain
In Bahrain, work permits are handled by LMRA, but dependent visas are handled by Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) under the Ministry of Interior, through the government eServices portal. A salary condition and accommodation proof apply, with attested certificates and health insurance. Use lmra.gov.bh to confirm your own work-permit status, and the NPRA eServices channel for the dependent application itself.
Kuwait
Dependent residence is issued under the family category by the Ministry of Interior, through MOI channels and the Sahel app. Kuwait applies a salary condition plus restrictions based on your registered occupation and qualification, and these have been tightened at various points. Your family’s Civil ID is then issued through PACI. Confirm current conditions via manpower.gov.kw and MOI, and register the Civil ID at paci.gov.kw after arrival.
Budget for more than the visa fee
The visa fee is rarely the biggest cost. Plan for attestation and translation at home, flights, medical tests, health insurance, ID card issuance, school fees and, in some countries, a recurring dependent fee. Families who budget only for the visa often run short at the ID stage, which can leave them out of status.
Check your own status before you apply
Every family application starts with the sponsor’s own record being correct. If your job title, salary or permit validity is wrong in the system, the family file will be rejected — and you may never be told the real reason.

Finally, be careful with agents who promise a family visa for a fixed price regardless of your profession or salary. No agent can change what is recorded on your permit. If your job title is the obstacle, the honest path is to discuss a correction with your employer, not to pay someone to bypass the rule. Verify every figure on your country’s official portal on the day you apply.
